A simple method to save €100 a month: how much it adds up to in a year, how to find that money in your spending and how to build the habit without stress.

Saving €100 a month comes to €1,200 a year, about €23 a week. For many people that’s realistic, if you know where to find it. Here is a four-step method.

1. See where your money goes

Record your spending for two or three months, as Finanzas para todos recommends. Without that record, any plan is a guess. Split it into fixed, variable and discretionary costs.

2. Find the €100 in discretionary and repeated costs

You don’t have to cut everything. Try two or three things:

  • Subscriptions you don’t use. Add up what you pay in a year; it’s usually a surprise.
  • Small, frequent spending: coffees, takeaways, impulse buys.
  • One adjustable variable cost, such as leisure or clothes, for a month.

With €25 less a week on things you won’t miss, you’re there.

3. Set it aside on payday

Save first, spend what’s left. If you wait until the end of the month to see what’s over, there’s rarely anything. The simplest approach is to fix a weekly amount and always set it aside on the same day.

4. Give it a purpose

Saving “just in case” wears you out; saving for something doesn’t. Finanzas para todos recommends starting with an emergency fund of 3 to 6 months of basic expenses and, once you have it, directing your savings towards your goals: a home, a trip or investing a part. Saving and investing aren’t the same, and it’s worth being clear on that before you decide.

If you fall short one month

That’s fine. Set aside what you can, even €40, and keep the habit. One weak month doesn’t ruin the plan; giving up does.

In Pastizal you create a goal and it tells you how much to set aside each week to get there, with challenges like the 52-week one and streaks so you don’t forget.
