Track your spending without connecting your bank

Why many people prefer not to give an app access to their bank, and how to track spending by hand or by importing your bank's CSV.

Many money apps ask you to connect your bank account to read your transactions. It’s convenient, but not everyone is happy to give that access. The good news is you can track your spending just as well without doing it.

Why some people prefer not to connect it

  • Privacy. Your transactions say a lot about you: where you live, what you buy, when you go out. If you don’t share them, they can’t leak from a third party.
  • Fewer dependencies. You don’t rely on the bank connection working, being renewed or changing its terms.
  • More awareness. Logging an expense makes you notice it. When everything flows in automatically, it’s easier to look away.

Option 1: log by hand, but fast

Logging only works if it’s very quick. What helps most:

  • Doing it right away, just after paying.
  • A keypad that lets you add or subtract if you paid for several things.
  • Categories sorted by use, so you’re not hunting every time.
  • An app that remembers your usual descriptions: type the supermarket’s name and it already knows it’s groceries.

With that, each expense takes a few seconds.

Option 2: import your bank’s CSV

Almost every bank lets you download your transactions as a CSV or Excel file from online banking. It’s your own file: you download it and you import it, without giving anyone access. Once a month is enough to stay up to date. If the app learns the category of each description, every import takes less effort.

Don’t forget

  • Make backups if your data only lives on your phone, and keep them wherever you choose.
  • Lock the app with your fingerprint or a PIN.
  • Check each month that what you logged matches your real account balance.
