How it's calculated
First we estimate what your body burns at rest with the Mifflin-St Jeor formula, which uses your sex, age, height and weight. Then we multiply it by a factor for how active you are, and that's your maintenance: the calories at which your weight stays stable.
To lose fat we subtract 20% and to build muscle we add 10%. For safety, the result never goes below 1,400 kcal for women or 1,600 for men, and the calculator is for people aged 16 and over.
It's an estimate, not a diagnosis: every body is different. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a health professional.

Why do I get the 1,400 or 1,600 kcal minimum?
For safety: neither the calculator nor the app suggests eating less than that, whatever your goal.
Which activity do I pick if I'm not sure?
Pick the lowest one that describes you. It's better to start low and adjust with your real weight than to overshoot.
