How to share pet care as a family

Practical ideas to split walks, meals and medication between everyone at home without missed or double doses, and to get children involved.

When several people look after the same pet, the hard part isn’t doing the tasks, it’s knowing who has done them. That’s where the classics come from: the double dinner, the forgotten pill or the walk nobody took.

1. List everything that needs doing

Write it down once, with how often:

  • Every day: meals, water, walks or litter tray, medication if they take any.
  • Every week: brushing, a proper clean of the bed or litter tray.
  • Every month or year: parasite prevention, vaccines, check-ups, buying food.

It shows the real workload, which is usually more than it seems.

2. Give tasks an owner

“Someone needs to take her out at night” doesn’t work. “Ana takes her out on weekdays and Luis at weekends” does. The more specific, the fewer arguments.

3. Mark what’s done

The rule that prevents the most problems: whoever does a task marks it straight away. A whiteboard in the kitchen works, but what works best is something everyone carries and that updates instantly on every phone.

With medication it matters most: giving a dose twice or skipping it can be dangerous. If anyone isn’t sure whether it’s been given, they should check before giving it.

4. Get children involved

Depending on their age, they can fill the water bowl, help prepare food or come along on walks. A fixed task with their name on it helps them feel responsible. Medication is best always left to an adult.

5. Plan for holidays and time away

If someone’s away for a few days or your pet stays with a sitter, keep the basics to hand: schedules, food and amounts, medication, the vet’s number and what to do if something happens. A written guide saves a lot of phone calls.
